Hiking 101 – So you want to go hiking for the first time?

Starting with the basics is a good idea for those new to getting their family outdoors and a great refresher for those that may have more experience.  There are a few things that are important to do each time that we head outside.  These things are for the safety and comfort of our family.

1.       Figure out where and when you want to take your hike.  You may start with a local rail trail system, or a local park or recreation area.  If you are near a forest system (state or national) there are many trails you can easily find online.  Or you can ask a friend, family member or a local Scout leader.  There are many online hiking Facebook groups you can join specific to your area or you can Google “Hiking Trails near me” to get started.

2.       If you are planning your trip a few days in advance check the weather as you plan.  Look for inclement weather so that you can be properly prepared.  Look for advisories for high wind or extreme heat, not just for rain or other precipitation and remember to check the weather before you leave to see if any pop-up storms are on radar.

3.       Pack the necessities in a comfortable backpack.  It doesn’t need to be fancy, just something that you can wear comfortably.  Inside the backpack take the following:

  • Water, and if you bring a pet, don’t forget a water dish for them too!
  • A map of the trail
  • Your 10 Essentials (check out our 10 Essentials blog post)
  • Any weather related items such as a rain coat or sweatshirt.
  • Any snacks or treats needed for the hike

4.       Before hitting the trail, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.  This is very important!

5.       Check the weather the day of your hike to make sure that it hasn’t changed from when you had previously checked it.

6.       Go and Have Fun!
